does anybody know what the best way to copy your word document into blogger is? every time i do that, i find that the formatting gets messed up and i have no way of fixing it, short of re-writing the whole thing.

What do you do when you are mad?

What do you do when you are very mad at something?

When someone says something bad to me, or something bad happens, as in something simple bad, not horrible bad, you know what I am saying right? something that can make you angry, not sad, there is a difference.

When I get angry I find the best cure is to go clean. Anything. I will clean washrooms, do dishes, scrub the windowsills and that place between the door and floor - I don't know what that is called off the top of my head. That's what I do, when someone yells at me, is mean to me, or some other such thing. That's my therapy.

What's yours?

people who leave price tags on...

I am really at a loss as to what to do with people who habitually leave price tags on their gifts. Not that there are not options, there are, but I just can never decide what the right option is. And I am not talking about a one off mistake, everyone can make that, it is the ones who ALWAYS leave the tags on.

What are the options and the objections to them? Well I have a list.....

1) Don't say anything, keep giving them gifts with price tags removed, and hope that they get the message. ----- well, they don't. Lord I have tried.

2) Start giving them gifts with price tags on. --- too tacky, cannot do that. Besides how does that make me any different from them and knowing these people they might just call me up on it, and then i cannot say that hey! you do that too. :(

3) Gently complain about someonelse who leaves tags on. --- I tried that. most of these people who leave tags on join me and start abusing the other people who leave tags on and never get it that I am cribbing about them. What is worse, they keep doing it. grrr....

4) Tell them oh my god the gift was so expensive, quote the exact value of it, and hope it embarrasses them enough to not do it the next time. --- this one person I did this to, and you have to know i was desperate, she keeps doing it, well, she actually turned to me and said ohhhh, don't worry about that, so what if it is expensive? umm.... what ? @#&*$#($

5) Hold on to their gift and find some way of giving it back to them. --- I have not yet tried this one, but, well, its ripe with possibilities of backfiring so... not that lucritive.

6) Say pointblank, oh you left the tag on, I haven't seen it yet, do you want to take it off? --- They do apologise then, and take it off, but it has absolutely no deterrent value for most of these people, they are beyond that. I find that they still keep doing it next time. :( though it does make them doubt if you really did not see the price, and bugs them becuase obviously they wanted you to see the price, so you washed away their plans :P small satisfaction.

So seriously I have no idea what to do with these people. I don't want to become like them and I do not want to stay on the recieving end of this complety rude behaviour. Tell me what you do? Is it working?

a strange dream

i had this very strange experience in a dream today. so i saw someone from the past, someone i have not seen in years and, well i saw them from far and i was doing something else, i did not talk to them, you know how dreams are, you wake up and then you go, oh damn, i should have done this... types. so anyways i saw this person from far,and somehow my cognition was still working, because i thought "hold on, why is he still wearing that t-shirt? that should have changed in these many years" and it is amazing that as soon as i had this thought, i turned to look back and lo and behold this person was in brand new clothes now, in a color i do not consciously remember having seen him wear. hmm... interesting, isn't it?

i am just amazed, in shock or awe or something. :-O how does that happen?

obsessions, infatuations and unrequited love.

i am watching tere naam right now, and i have been thinking about obsessions, crushes, and infatuations. about love - mutual, platonic, or unrequited.

hindi movies are not the place to learn about love, or any of this stuff. they are crazy. they can make stalking look cool, or abusive, chauvinistic, sexist comments sound flirtatious. see they can make you want stuff that you would never in your right minds want.

so lets keep all hindi movies aside and then think about this.

what is the difference?

is the difference in the feeling, the intensity of the emotion, or the sanity of your actions? and who defines sane in any case? Can the duration of time a feeling lasts, define it?

infatuation, i am thinking this would be the easiest one to tackle, so let's start here. infatuation or a crush. something triggers it. it could be it is the first time you are seeing this person - the myth of love at first sight, or you could have known them all your life, and yet they do something different on this day. it could be a smile, a particular way of saying something, a gesture. i insist that there is a trigger, because if you look back i am sure you can pin point that exact moment in time before which you were not infatuated and then when you were. unless you have a really bad memory and now have no freaking idea of what happened when. :D its ok. you were preoccupied. happens.

usually, by general agreement, infatuations are not supposed to last too long. but that is what bothers me. who defines too long? two weeks? two months? two years? when do you say that an infatuation has turned in to an obsession?

obsessions, by the aforementioned general agreement seem to carry a negative connotation. they are some how deemed to be harmful. to yourself and to others. right. i guess it is not healthy to obsess about someone for ten years and still not have the guts to tell them. i see that. and also because obsessive behaviour usually leads to other destructive actions.

but what if you are not harming them, not stalking them, not concocting weird love potions, or doing any such thing that infringes on their daily life. nothing. you are happy to not even exist in their observable universe, you merely make them the centre of yours. what is so wrong in that? sorry, i don't get it. how is that really so different from an infatuation? an infatuation is a mere passing interest, a child looking through a shop window going 'i want that', and then moving on to the next colorful object with the same 'i want that'. as opposed to ' i want that' and then i never could bring myself to want anything else, ever again.

why is that so bad? or is there some deeper, darker, difference? something other than longetevity?

and when does an obsession enter that haloed realm of true but unrequited love? because if i get it right, popular culture denotes the that to be some pure, heavenly, sacred thing. doesn't it? how do you differentiate between the feeling that drives each of these? who gets to label these things?

it doesnot even have to be a person, it could be a thing you covet, or something you wanted to do. what if there was an idea in your head that for some reason you did not follow up on, life changed and you were somehow still stuck on it. you have not been able to get it out, all this while. how do you know if you should listen to the voice of reason telling you to move on or to that mysical - follow your bliss mumbo jumbo? this is what you want, this is what drives you, go get it philosophy.

your inaction, your not going and getting it, is it because you are being rational or is it because you are just too chicken, a coward dawning the garb of reason?

other people do not really care what your motivations are, they are just bothered about your actions, and how those in turn affect their own lives. but you need to solve this for your self. you need to figure out, what drvies you? what your inherent motivations are? what is the stuff you are made of? who are you - the coward or the priest offering sacrifices at reason's altar?

oh you hate both those words now don't you? anyways, what troubles me is, how would you distinguish between the two? its a qualitative analysis problem. what test would give two different observable results?

the trouble with creation

let's start with an analogy.

suppose i put in a lot of effort and make kheer for my husband, and he walks in, wrinkles his nose, and goes, umm... i don't like meetha too much. ( he does that :) , speaking from experience ) how do you think that makes me feel? disappointed. of course.

and then a friend comes in and she goes, kheer, i love kheer. so i serve her the kheer, she relishes it, praises it. how do you think that makes me feel? of course i am glad someone is enjoying it. i wanted to hear those words, but this is not the person i wanted to hear those words from. :|

you know what i am saying?

oh and before you get me wrong, let me put this in writing, i love, capital L, Love, cooking and having friends over, making lots of food for people and watching them enjoy it, gives me this very "mom"ish satisfaction. unfortunately, cooking and feeding people is the only means i now have of showing people i care for them. when my husband is upset i cook him something nice to cheer him up, when he is happy, i again cook something nice, to celebrate. that's all i know how to do anymore. but i digress, i was talking about something else.

going back to the analogy, the question i am asking is: if i create something for someone in particular, and that person does not care much for it, does it give me any satisfaction to see someone else appreciate it?

its a consolation. did not all go to waste. but that is just what it is. a consolation. isn't it?

sometimes i wonder, that these poems, and songs, and stories that i love so much, that mean so much to me, that i cannnot get over, you see, they were not written for me. the poet wrote them for someone else, and i can be a fan all i want, but does he really care for my admiration?

did he get it from the intended target? and if he did not, how does he feel? was it all a big waste of time for him? i wonder.

then again, what do we care how he feels?

a beautiful poem was written, it is there for eternity, for the world to enjoy, take delight in, savour at its own pace, does the poet's personal satisfaction really factor in to this equation?

is the creation almost independent of the creator's ulterior motives?

is it fair for the creator to dictate his terms as to how and who is allowed to experience this creation?

is there any such legitimate claim to stake?
just wondering.

payal ki jhankar

i was listening to this song, and there was a line
mujhe pagal kar de yaar
teri payal ki jhankaar

so i want to ask, do you know anyone, or if you are a guy then, to you yourself, has it ever happened that the sound of someone's payal made any sort of impact on you? not even a huge one, but did you ever, even slightly, for a while find it endearing?

most songs and poems seem to talk of it, but in real life, i think people find that payal sound irritating, don't they? most guys i know would a) not notice it or b) go like ye kya shor macha rakha hai?

so am wondering if the songs are out of sync with reality or there is something to the myth?

मुझे पागल कर दे यार, ये उल्टे सीधे सवाल.....

mind over matter

i was trying to put up some decorations this morning, and as i stood on this step stool, i felt queasy. which does not make a lot of sense. when i can stand on flat ground on just my two feet and not falter, why not on a wide enough step stool?

as i get higher, why do i start worrying about balance and wish to be closer to a wall, to hold on or something. i still only need that much space to stand, i know how to stand on two feet without holding anything, but just being high up in the middle of the room ... does something to my mind, it starts playing tricks on me, my muscles twitch, my heart rate goes up, i sweat more, i am all over the place. i start panicking for no good reason.

it is one of those reverse mind over matter problems. there is no physical threat, but my mind has created one, and now my body is reacting to it. if i can calm my self down, i should theoretically be able to stand on that stool for a very very long time, limited only by my stamina. but in practice i cannot, i can barely make it past a couple of minutes.

it is ridiculous. so i am standing there having a virtual argument with myself, while wondering, how do you argue with your own brain, how do you reason with the very seat of reason, would it even be a fair match?

aliens

why do we think life exists outside our earth?

because it would seem fantastic to suppose that such a lucky chance happened only once. statistically, even if an event is extremely unlikely to happen, it almost becomes a certainty if you ran an infinity of trials. so it is more likely to have happened elsewhere than not.

why do we think it is intelligent life?

well, same as above, we are intelligent so ...

why do we think they are more advanced? most sci fi books/ movies would like us to believe that.

not that they would be, but they could be, if they have been around longer or something, and have yet not destroyed themselves, seems to be a side effect of intelligence - self destruction :)

why do we want to meet them?

hey! i am stumped at that one. we don't seem to be doing too well differences on earth, i have no idea how we are going to assimilate a completely different life form - whether it is hostile or benign is immaterial. so why are we so in to this search for life in the universe stuff?

implicit association tests

have you taken those implicit association tests? i have. and i disagree with them. okay, fine, who am i to disagree with a reputed psycho - analytical tool promoted by harvard? i don't know. no one. just my opinion here.

i disagree with the way the tests are structured, not at all with what they are trying to discern. for those unfamiliar with IAT's they are designed to measure a person's inherent bias towards race, gender, or age. here is the link check it out for yourself, and then you might see what i am talking about.

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/selectatest.html

when you take the test, you have to learn to hit e for a white american and i for a black american, the same for harmless objects and weapons. you make a couple of mistakes in the beginning. but by the time you learn this stuff, they change it on you, now you are hitting e for white americans and harmless objects and then they ask you to do the opposite e for white americans and weapons.

so now my question is: is the test even measuring a bias to associate weapons with black americans or just my brain in overload because you keep changing the rules on me? would the result vary if they asked me associate weapons and white americans earlier on in the test and not later? what if you first taught me to hit i for black americans and harmless objects?

this way i get the feeling that the test creates the very bias it is claiming to measure...

i am curious, let me know what you think.
