is tan ne muk jana

bhanven roz malishan kariye

another Gurdas Mann gem, though I think it is a bit too obvious compared to some of his other wonderful works, but when you put it in front of the other garbage that is spewed off in the name of punjabi songs these days this looks like picasso.

or
gall sachi sachhyan diyan
dab ke vahiye raj ke khayiye
thoda khayie kharch layiye, thoda daan punn te layiye

and wow he can still dance, and I think he really is one of the most good looking punjabi singers even now. Perhaps that is what he is telling the younger generation with the other song in the same album, bai ke vekh jawaka, baabe bhangra paunde ne. Who better than him to show the younger generation how it is done.

and here is my favourite one, coz it reminds me of my dadi and her saying that you get angry because you are weak, and every health problem could be solved with some sarson ka tel in your head :)

baute laad ladayan nu ajj susti maar gayi

lakh pardesi hoyiye

apna des nai bhandida
jhede mulk da khayiye usda bura nai mangida

It is one of those Gurdas Mann songs that you really must listen to each word of, it is very well written and very much steeped in that punjabi folk wisdom that people give you all the time and you hardly listen to them and then years go by and no one says those things to you anymore and you miss them.

maade bande vich vi koi gun changa hovega

niyat bina na kade muradan miliyan milan giyan

i love this song, because i accept the philosophy behind it.
aa soneya ve jag jyundeyan de mele,
that life is for the living, you can do what ever you want while you are alive, for no one knows what happens after death. even the things you think are final are not final as long as you are alive. you can change the situation, death is the only last word, after that you cannot do much. So if there is someone you are upset with, some one you love, some one you want to forgive, you must do it now, tell them while you are both alive, because even if one of you dies, that's it, that is the end of that relationship. I get that. Not to say there are not some unfinished businesses i have not left hanging around, well there are, i just keep telling myself i will make that phone call tomorrow, or write that email tomorrow.

It's not writing the email that is hard, it is the part of- maybe they don't even care that i forgive them or seek their forgiveness, may be what meant so much to me, did not mean anything to them, maybe it is a non-entity, that i have built up in my head. That is the worst of all arguments, very hard to refute.....

i just keep telling myself , there is time to figure this out yet, when inside i know there is not. i am being an idiot. I know.

dil utthe deyiye

I love these lines

Nange pindee mainu maar na chamkaan
Mere ronde nain Nimaane
Jineeyaan tan mere te lagiyaan
tere ek lage e tu jaane
Ghulam Farida Dil othhe daiyee
Jithee agla kadar vi jaane

to an extent i agree with them too, yes, it stands to reason, ki dil vahin dena chahiye, jahan koi kadar vi kare, lekin, it is a matter of fact ;) ki aksar dil vahin diya jata hai jahan kadar na ho, jo mud kar dekhe tak na, jise lakh bulao, aur vo aaye bhi na...

kyon?
kyonki,

dil... diya nahi jaata, kho jaata hai.
pyar kiya nahi jaata, ho jaata hai tantananaaa

tareyaan di chunni vali

i really like this song. i am trying to translate it, why? i don't know, because i want to. lately that seems like the only good reason in the world to do anything. getting back to the song.

i love the words:

tareyaan di chunni vali
mukk gayi e raat kali
mukk jana raat vangu
shuru kiti baat vangu

taking its curtain of stars
the dark night is gone
yet the song of my life goes on
i might end like this night
but, like a story of an absent minded teller
my wait for someone, will linger on,
long after i am gone.

aiven na haloon sadde dukh khind jaange
akkhan diyan sippiyan chon moti dig jaanege
aiho ne guzara sadda
aiho ne sahara sadda
eho sadde sajna di aakhri vaseet ve

Don't move so fast, my blues will fall apart
these pearls from the oysters of my eyes will drop
for these are my sustenance
these are my pillars
these are in his will, the remnants of what he left for me....

parande

i love gurdaas maan songs. this one is beautiful too

tussi lang jaana ve sannu tang jaana
tussi auna nahi kisse ne sannu launa nahi
ve, tange rehnde killiyan de naal parande
jinna de raati yaar vichde

there is a philosphy to his songs, that sufi touch, which reminds me of mirza ghalib. here are the parts i like the best

neend na dekhe bistara
te bhukh na vekhe maas
maut na vekhe umer nu
ishq na vekhe zaat

----X---

na sona na chandi khattya
daulat shohrat pani
jad vi khatti ishq ne khatti duniya vich badnami

--X--
ishq kamauna sone varga
yaar banaune heere
kisse bazar ich mull nahi tera
ve ishq diye tasveere
--X--
lakkhan shamma jaliyan
lakkhan ho guzare parvane
haje vi je kar chaddya janda
chadd de ishq rakkane
ke tange rehnde, killiyan de naal parande...

--X--
i like this one because that is one of the things i am trying to learn

bolan nalon chup changeri

wait, did i write the whole song, saying here are the parts i like the best? ahhhhhhhhhhhh. main aisi kyon hoon? here, go listen to it :D

challa

I love Gurdaas maan and his challa song, actually i love a whole lot of his songs, so much so that i should make a separate category for them :)

I like the way it begins

jaavo ni koi mod leyao
ni mere naal gaya aj lad ke
allah kare je aajave sohna
devan jaan kadma vich dhar ke

and i like this next part too, it is sort of funny but sad, funny in a very punjabi sort of way, its hard to explain. it goes

challa kaliyan mirchan
mohra pi ke marsan
sire tere chad san
gall sun challeya dhola
ve saad ke keetai kola

matlab i will comit suicide, but i will blame it on you... how crazy is that? does that make sense? suicide is by definition self inflicted. Isn't it? You don't get to point fingers at others. But people do that all the time , we blame others for our wrong decisions, i do too, i am not saying i don't, only that i see the error of my ways. Again, am not saying i will change my ways, in fact i am not sure if that is even possible but, oh i don't know what the heck i am saying... dekhya bhula ditta na... sheh.
